At Po-Zu we believe in bringing you exceptional performance from the natural world. Our materials are carefully selected to offer you the ultimate in comfort, warmth and durability and are sourced from some of the best available renewable sources.
Here are the fantastic sustainable materials we work with:
Linen is the original sustainable material dating back to the ancient Egyptians. It is environmentally friendly, growing naturally without pesticides, fertilizer or irrigation which is why it is rare to see the statement ‘certified organic linen’.
Made from the stem of the flax plant, it can grow worldwide but processing is labour intensive and therefore concentrated in low labour cost countries. Our linen is sourced local to our factories in Sri Lanka and Portugal.
It is stronger than cotton and absorbs moisture without holding bacteria. Linen also offers excellent anti-microbial properties and is breathable, keeping you warm in cool weather and cool in warm weather. If left untreated, dyed and unfinished, it is fully biodegradable and recyclable.
Piñatex™ is a natural, sustainably sourced, cruelty free material.
Working directly with farmers in the Philippines, it is made from the discarded leaves of the pineapple plant and created with low water usage and low production waste, containing no harmful chemicals.
As Piñatex is plant based, containing no animal products it is 100% vegan. For footwear, it is breathable, lightweight and supple which makes it a good alternative to leather which is not environmentally friendly and hazardous to produce.
We only work with Organic Cotton, that is GOTS certified, the global standard to ensure organic status of textiles from harvesting through to environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing and labelling. This ensures we are investing in water conservation, cleaner air, better soil and farmer livelihoods.
Organic cotton is natural and hypoallergenic, making it an ideal choice for those who suffer from allergies. It is strong and durable which makes it hard wearing and low maintenance. It is also breathable and odour free, absorbing moisture from the skin and keeping the body cool.
Cotton is biodegradable and 100% Vegan.
Apple Skin is made from the waste produced by the apple juice industry, from apples grown organically in the Italian Alps. The material is created by combining the waste from the production of apple juice into a polyurethane (PU) mixture to make it more flexible and hard-wearing. Unlike other bio-based products, Apple Skin alternative to leather does not require soil or water for cultivation.
FRUMAT™ Apple skin is superior to synthetic leather alternatives as it uses less water, chemicals and carbon emissions than synthetics.
It is breathable and has a more luxurious look and feel than PU alternatives. It is 100% Vegan.
Eco Microfibre is a man-made fibre and a good alternative to leather, commonly referred to as Vegan Leather or Faux Leather. Made from a water-based and solvent-free polyurethane faux leather (PU) with a polyester backing, it is similar in texture, look and feel to real leather, versatile and hard wearing.
Eco Microfibre still has a significant environmental impact and is therefore not ideal long term but it is more environmentally friendly, less toxic and hazardous than working with real leather.
It is breathable, easy to maintain and durable. It is also 100% Vegan.
Wool has several sustainable attributes. It is rapidly renewable, biodegradable, recyclable and can be produced organically.
It is naturally antibacterial and very durable. It is flame resistant and has a natural water repellency which makes it high performance. Its also breathable and a good insulator – keeping you warm and dry.
All our wool is unbleached, and in most cases un-dyed, such as our felt wool lining and our British wool tweed, which is sourced locally from white, brown and black British Jakob sheep.
Cork is a natural material harvested from the bark of the Cork Oak tree. It has many benefits owing to its layered cell like structure which offers great elasticity and ensures it can be compressed easily without losing any flexibility.
It has a natural resistance to moisture and liquid penetration and together with its natural ability to absorb vibrations it is a perfect choice for shoes, providing bounce and flexibility under foot.
It’s also lightweight, wear-resistant and biodegradable.
When it comes to performance, breathability, and durability, leather is still regarded to be the best material available for shoe uppers, and we say: but only if it’s ethically sourced! Unlike most leathers in the market which are tanned with highly toxic substances and which could be sourced from cattle farms that cause deforestation, our leathers are certified by Biocalce. They are tanned in Portugal using an environmentally friendly method, which is free from harmful chemicals such as chromium, and heavy metals. We can also guarantee that all the raw hides that end up as leather in our shoes are of Iberian origin.
Coir is a mix of coconut husk and natural latex. The latex is added to make the coconut husk more flexible and comfortable to wear. All natural, this is the material we use in our unique Foot Mattress™ technology.
It moulds to the shape of your foot, and provides cushioning underfoot, alleviating pressure points, supporting joints and reducing fatigue.
Coconut husk is natural and therefore adjusts to hot and cold temperatures, keeping you both warm and dry. It also has natural anti-bacterial properties and prevents odour.
Natural rubber latex is derived from the milky sap of the Lactae Hevea tree. Rubber tappers extract the liquid which is then refined into a dry form of rubber for commercial use.
Rubber is highly resilient, has a large stretch ratio and is extremely waterproof. Natural latex rubber is solvent free and more hard wearing than standard petroleum based rubber.
We use Natural Latex together with Coconut husk in our unique Foot Mattress to add flexibility and comfort underfoot.
We only use Natural Fair Rubber ensuring the improvement of the working and living conditions of the primary producers of natural latex (rubber) and the environmentally friendly sustainable production of natural rubber.
