Star Wars Cosplay Rey - Guest Post

By Denise Dolan, guest writer.
At Po-Zu we have such amazing friends, thank you all for sharing your photos with us - showing us how you style our Po-Zu trainers, and indeed our boots!
We love seeing them - so today we are sharing a Guest post from Denise Dolan, explaining how she styles her REY boots, and the journey she's taken to create this amazing Cosplay costume, over to Denise:

Denise Dolan Star Wars costuming story:

"I am a child of the 70s and 80s and one of my first drive-in movie experiences was The Empire Strikes Back, so growing up with the films created a special place in my heart for Star Wars.

Playing “good guys” and “bad guys” from the original trilogy was part of my childhood, even if, at the time, it wasn’t “cool” for girls to like Star Wars. But then again, I’ve always been a bit of a Rebel.
When The Force Awakens was released, I immediately felt a connection to Rey’s character…she is strong and determined, as well as kind and caring. The moment she first lifts her goggles in the desert of Jakku always brings tears to my eyes. That year, for Halloween, I pulled together a makeshift costume with thrift store purchases and was so excited to represent my favorite desert scavenger.
In March of 2018, I made some huge changes in my life and decided that one of my goals for the year was to join Rebel Legion, an international costuming group that focuses on charity and community events. Rebel Legion has specific guidelines on having your costume be as close to screen accurate as possible for approval to attend events. It was a bit intimidating at first, because I have never been much of a seamstress, and have never really built any props, but I was determined to learn. I joined a Facebook group, the Rey Cosplay Community, where I found not only a wealth of information, but also a sense of belonging and camaraderie that I’ve never had before.
One of my first purchases to begin my journey as “Jakku Rey” was my Po-Zu Rey boots. I was happy to support a company that uses sustainable materials and believes strongly in ethical manufacturing.  When my boots arrived, I have to admit, I cried. I immediately tried them on and was extremely pleased with the fit, comfort, and screen accuracy of the boot…beautiful and soft, durable and rugged…just like Rey.
Since then, I’ve gotten four Rey costumes approved, have added three more pairs of Po-Zu boots to my collection, and have learned so much about sewing and prop building.  I’ve made lifelong friends in the Legion, and am so thankful to be able to bring joy and happiness to children at our events.
Star Wars has a magical way of bringing people together. My son and I both share a love for the films and will often quiz each other on trivia, talk about theories we’ve come up with, and pour over costume details.
He’s 13 now, and has been a member of the Galactic Academy as Kylo Red and a Jawa.  He’s able to attend many of the Rebel Legion events with me, and I’m so thankful to be able to instill a love of volunteering in him.  And, he is also my photographer!  He really has an eye for detail, and his patience and excitement in getting the perfect shots for me really warms my heart.
The love, encouragement, and support from my son, husband, family, and friends has meant the world to me.
Rey’s journey of discovery feels so close to mine over the past few years…her determination and strength is an inspiration. I feel like I’ve grown so much as a costumer and as a woman…finding my true self along the way.  May the Force be with you…always."
