Po-Zu for Amazon Life

Autumn-Winter 2009

Po-Zu and Amazon Life have collaborated to develop the Well boot, which resembles a traditional Wellington boot for its waterproof qualities, but made entirely with pure natural materials.

The beauty of this collaboration lies in the main upper boot’s material- a biodegradable ‘wild rubber’ (or vegetable leather), made from the Amazonian Seringueira rubber tree. The Kayapo Indians rubber tapers, who live and work deep in the Amazon rainforest, extract the latex by hand, and spread it onto an organic cotton canvas to undergo a long natural curing process. This is important sustainable product not only supports biodiversity conservation, but helps protect the Amazonian rainforest from deforestation.

Combining Po-Zu’s comfort features and the outstanding qualities of the Treetap as a waterproof natural rubber, the Well boot has proved popular with outdoor enthusiasts.

Amazon Life designs, develops and markets sustainable products while focusing on social accountability, love for nature and respect for human traditions. The survival of tribal communities in the Amazon Basin depends to a large extent on rubber tapping activities; and vegetable rubber is the primary material used for the production of AmazonLife bag collections.

Rubber tappers spend six months every year in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, where they extract latex and process it by hand. The production of vegetable rubber is the fruit of hard work and patience of the local populations, who see in this product a precious instrument to preserve biodiversity in their territory and prevent the deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest.
