The coconut palm has been described as one of the most productive trees in the world. Multitudes of products can be sourced from the different parts of the palm tree, from ropes to upholstery, buttons to bridges, and an extensive of toiletries, cosmetics, and foodstuff.

The Versatility of the coconut can be appreciated by simply observing the names that many nationalities bestow it; In Sanskrit it is kalpa vriksha "the tree which provides all the necessities of life". In Malay Language, it is pokok seribu guna "the tree of a thousand uses". In the Philippines, the coconut is commonly known as the "Tree of Life".
